Going Old School…and Cherries Jubilee Cheesecake Bars…

Good afternoon, my friends!

Another cold and rainy day here in California…I really don’t ever remember rain this far into the spring before…we usually don’t get any after March or so…crazy!

Just one card to share with you today…This week’s Crafty Secrets’ challenge over at Splitcoast is to show our “school spirit”…go “old school”…Appropriate for the end of another school year, don’t you think?!

Here’s what I came up with:

DSC01607_edited-1

A very “old school” image from Crafty Secrets’ “Childhood” Images & Journal Notes booklet.  I went with a much plainer look for this card…I really love the vintage lined paper for this…it comes from DCWV’s “Vintage Collage” stack.

DSC01603_edited-1

Some homey old lace, Martha Stewart “Putty” seam binding, and some gingham ribbon, a “ruler” sticker from Crafty Secrets’ “Little Boys” stickers,  paper roses, buttons, and just a bit of glitter…

While making this card I was reminded of some of my favorite teachers…

My favorite, I think was Mrs. Erdelyi in Second Grade…She was young, beautiful and kind.  It was while I was in her class that I remember first falling in love with history (which was my major in college)…ancient Greece and Rome, Greek myths…my mind started to open to the wonderful world around me…

And some other very dear teachers in my life…

Shirley Gorrell--1

My wonderful Mother-in-law, Shirley, who taught P.E. in high school and college…

Minnie Frederica Peterson Campbell

My husband’s grandmother, Minnie, who taught school in Wisconsin in the 1800’s…

Minnie P. Campbell's first school in Brooklyn, Wisconsin

Here’s Minnie with her students one year.  I love that we have this picture!  Reminds me of the image on my card…

Pauline Udall about 18 years old_edited

My great-grandmother, Pauline…you’ve heard a few stories about her before, who taught in a little Arizona schoolhouse around the turn of the century…

Mary West Riggs

Another of my great-grandmothers, Mary, who also taught in a small schoolhouse around 1900…

DSC00486

And the newest soon-to-be teacher in our family…my beautiful daughter, Chelsea, who’s a little more than halfway through her college preparations to become an elementary teacher…we’re so proud of her!

So thank-you, to all the wonderful teachers in our lives…past, present, and future…where would we be without you?

And now…something sweet!

Cherries Jubilee Cheesecake Bars!

Oh, my!  These are just about the yummiest things on the planet!  So easy, too!

I saw a tiny picture of this on the Betty Crocker box I was using one day, went to their website, and found this recipe:

DSC01583_edited-1

Cherries Jubilee Cheesecake Bars

1 box Betty Crocker cherry chip cake mix

1/2 cup butter, softened

2 packages (8oz. each) cream cheese, softened

1 container Betty Crocker cherry frosting

3 eggs

1.  Heat oven to 325 degrees.  In a large bowl, beat dry cake mix and butter with mixer on low speed until crumbly; reserve 1 cup.  In bottom of ungreased 13x9-inch pan, press remaining crumbly mixture.

2.  In same bowl, beat cream cheese and frosting with mixer on medium speed until smooth.  Beat in eggs until blended.  Pour over crust; sprinkle with reserved crumbly mixture.

3.  Bake about 45 minutes or until set;  cool completely.  Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours, until chilled.  Store covered in refrigerator.

***I actually used fat-free cream cheese, and it was amazing!  ( and I didn’t feel quite so bad!)  Delicious!

DSC01581_edited-1

Well, that’s all from me today…hope you all have a beautiful evening, and I’ll see you soon with something new…

***Just wanted you all to know I’m going to take a long weekend computer break!  (….starting tomorrow…Still need {want} to make lots of visits today!)  Going to enjoy some fun family time  & won’t post again until next week.  I hope you all have the most wonderful Memorial Day and weekend!***

  13. First of all Julie, I love the card. (as always!) You have captured the essense of the end of the school year perfectly with your card and your words! What a lovely tradition of teachers you have in your family. I loved seeing all the old photos of the teachers that have come before and your lovely sweet daughter who is a teacher to come! And then you tempt me with those delicious looking squares that I know I will never have because such things as Betty Crocker cherry cakes and icings do not exist over here in the UK. Sigh . . . so close and so delicious looking that I feel I could just reach into the screen and take a bite, and yet . . . so far!! It's not fair!!! Oh well, perhaps it is better for me that I partake of their deliciousness this way. Far less calories I think! But they do look very yummy!! I hope that you have a lovely weekend. Love and hugs flying across the ocean and expanse of America to you my dear friend! xxoo

It is just so heartwarming and wonderful. That recipe sounds good but won't be finding that cake mix or the frosting on this side of the world. Boo! Hope you have a fabulous Friday. Best wishes always, Tammy

  21. Ah, Julie, your lovely card and musings just took me down my own memory lane. Mrs. Jaakola was my most inspiring English teacher who blew life into my writing spark... We don't have a lot of teachers in our family and I'd love to see more! I'll have to check out Mr. Privet's family tree and see if there are any, there. You must be SO proud of your girl! xx P&H

Love your schoolhouse challenge. You have some amazing old pictures. In fact I scrolled through some older posts & found even more! Your Great Grandmother Mary looks like Aunt Bee from the Mayberry Show! Congrats to sweet Chelsea (what an awesome pic) teachers are SO important. My kids start kindergarten this year & I pray their teacher is kind & patient! LOL Lisa

  32. Julie,

I love the card you made. And how funny, my degree is in history too. I though I wanted to each high school, but I find myself teaching third grade and loving it. I also come from a family of teachers. My dad, my brother, my sister, my aunt, my uncle, another aunt, my cousin, my brother-in-law - I think that's everyone. I wish your daughter well in her studies. What grade does she think she might like to teach?

I'm going to have to try that recipe. Looks really simple and delicious! We just got our first fresh cherries of the season and they were so delicious.

Have a wonderful long relaxing weekend. I plan to work on projects around the house since we've been gone so many weekends this month.
