Remains of the Day

DSC03112_edited-1

They still look beautiful, this pair of shoes…worn just for one day.  One day.  One very special day.

A gift to me by my mother.  Carefully kept all the years in between that special day and now.  They are for me to care for now—and then my daughters in their turn…

My grandmother, Velda, was the oldest child the family, and I know that—for her—on that day in 1937, everything was to be done just right.  Perfect.  Nothing but the best would do.  Her parents would have made sure of that…

The dress handmade by loving family hands with the finest of materials…the shoes--a beautiful, white satin--expertly made.  The best.

The veil—sheer and gauzy, brittle now, but lovely still…

…careful handmade folds—garland-like—encircled her golden curls that day…

A lovely, loopy bow of luscious satin was with the rest—meant to grace the bouquet, I would imagine…

…a large satiny, pleated bow with heavy wire attached—for the back of her dress, I wonder?

All the elements combined.  Once crisply white, they have now settled comfortably into a soft creaminess.    The remains of a beautiful, splendid day.  Just one day that made all the difference in our family.  One very special day…

Moments

DSC03103_edited-1

Do you ever feel like the moments of your life are speeding by at lightning speed these days?  I sure do!

DSC03100_edited-1

So many things to do, to enjoy—to live—that I’m finding the only creative thing I have time for at the moment is to play in my art journal whenever I sit for those fleeting quiet spells…

Pages I’ve already painted & prepared are just waiting for me--

I know my days will calm down all too soon--my daughters are almost grown, and their lives will lead them out of our door…but for now, they are here…

…so I will enjoy the rush of days.  The hectic pace.  The joy of it all--and I will savor those few quiet moments.  And create.

Ephemera Journal

DSC03072_edited-1

A new little project begun this week…a handmade journal using only vintage ephemera as page material…

DSC03063_edited-1

Using an Ephemera Kit from Vintage Street Market, and countless papers I already had in my collection, I made a start…

DSC03064_edited-1

With a piece of sturdy cardstock as a base for each page, I just layered each one with bits of sometimes fragile but beautiful old paper…

…until a nice mini-album emerged.  And I love it!  Then bits and pieces of favorite things were added--

along with vintage images to help illustrate the thoughts I was thinking…

…a bit of doodling thrown in, of course—as usual!

…and my little handmade journal emerged.  Quite a fun little project to complete in just a day or two.

So much fun, I think I may just have to start another one!
